In 2010 I found myself burnt out on running. I had all of the best intentions to run Detroit in October, but once I missed one training run it was easier to miss the second, and then the third, and then there was no way to get back on track. Three marathons in the previous 12 months did me in and I began to question if I would ever run another 26.2 mile race. Although I am still not 100% bought in that I am recouped and ready to go, I do love running again. Why? I have added another activity to my regular routine, Zumba.
Zumba for me is a goofy hour of sweat and giggles. Added to my regular rhythm of running it breaks up the monotony and makes me look forward to the next run. The core work also improves my run by giving me more stability. This is very helpful on my outdoor wintery runs.
Mixing up my routine also reminded me of something very important to take with me to work; love what you do and always have fun. Find ways to add fun to your day to break up your routine and remind yourself that you love what you do. It's too easy, especially if you're type A like me, to get so deep into a project that you forget to make it fun along the way.
