Weekend Playlist; 9.9.11

Yikes!  Back to school week.  Who had more anxiety going back to school you or your kids?  I find that I worry about things that never even cross their little minds.  Will they get on the right bus?  Will they have a nice teacher?  Will they make friends?  I'm sure my kids were a little nervous, but not nearly as much as I was.
How can you help your children relax?  Give them a confidence boost in the morning before they take off for school.   When they get dressed for school tell them that they look good.  Don't you feel better when someone compliments how you look?  It's the same for them.  Instead of saying "have a good day" before they run out the door tell them "you're going to have a great day".  The little things make a big difference. The little change in words has a big impact on the message.  Just make sure to not over do it because children's intuition is amazing.  They will know when you're insincere.

A friend of mine put a sign above her door last year that said her "kids names" "rule the school".  They would high five the sign on their way out the door every day.  It was the little boost they needed to kick up their confidence and get them back to being eligible for sports.

So much going on with the kids that I haven't had time to look into events in southeast Michigan.  I know that my town, Brighton, has a BBQ and Jazz Festival on Friday and Saturday.

Huron Clinton Metroparks are hosting a rememberance for 9/11 with a sky lantern launch at many of their locations.  You can take the entire family and enjoy many activities in the park to work your way to 10,000 steps before the lanterns are set off appropriately at 9:11.

The team at Running Fit always has the most interesting events.  This weekend they have Run Woodstock. Check out the events they are hosting for this one:  Flower Power 5 mile, Hippy Half, and the Mellow Marathon.  There are shorter runs as well like the Far Out 5k.

FAST FORWARD

October 2nd, The Brooksie Way.  This one is in Rochester and made the list for scenic fall runs.  We ran it in 2009 and it is definitely my most memorable finish line.  My husband and I lost each other at the beginning of the race, but I caught up to him at around mile 11.  Realizing that we could finish under 2:00 we held hands and booked it to the finish line crossing together at 1:58.
October 16th, Free Press Marathon.  We are signed up for this one making it our second appearance in Detroit.  There is also a marathon in Grand Rapids for the western side of the state on the same day
