My 68 Day Challenge: The Whole30 Day 2

Beware of labels!
Headlines this week all read "Americans Eat Way Too Much Sugar".  Hello!  That's not news.  Some, OK, most is no brainer stuff like soda and snacks.  Some is legitimately hidden in food that is made to appear like a healthy choice,  We are trying to be good and are tricked by the label.

A typical can of soda may have almost 40 g of sugar in it, and who drinks a can anymore.  You grab a Vitamin Water thinking you are making a better choice.  There is still around

My 68 Day Challenge; The Whole30 Shopping

Today was an adventure.   Reading up on the Whole30 I wasn't intimidated or discouraged at all about the plan.  We eat pretty healthy now.  Everyone in my family can cook and, except for mushrooms, we are pretty daring when it comes to food. The only piece that seemed to be a challenge is where to find the ingredients? There are no fancy grocery stores or health markets to find organic farm raised meats around here.  Today we went searching for one.  Since when is shopping not fun?

Stop 1, a large health food market.  It looked promising from the outside.

My 68 Day Challenge; The Whole30

To successfully achieve a goal you should spend 80% of your time in planning to ensure that the 20% you spend executing can be done with excellence.  Planning on successfully completing the Whole30 program I started my planning by reading the book It Starts With Food.

After reading this book, with an open mind, I believe that adjusting your diet for 30 days can make you feel better, sleep better, think better, and perform better.  If you want to lose weight, that is an added benefit.

This book is absolutely fascinating.
To those who gave it very skeptical reviews, I ask . . .why did you buy this book in the first place? Did you not read the description first?
I will be gifting this book frequently.

Cook Chicken Once for Four Easy Meals

“I wanted to figure out why I was so busy, but I couldn't find the time to do it.”
― Todd Stocker

Busy families like ours can still eat great with a little planning.  With one great ingredient and some creative thinking you can go far.  By pure accident I found my new favorite chicken marinade.  I was all set in my mind on how I was going to marinade chicken and at the last second my hubby cried out, "don't put an acid in the marinade". Crap!  I was going to use citrus.  What now?

I had just found a new salad dressing I had never seen before, Bolthouse Farms Cilantro Avocado Yogurt Dressing, with only 40 calories per serving.  What the heck, I thought, I might as well try it.

It's a new favorite!

Sofa to 1/2 Marathon in 65 Days Final Post

It's race week.  It's time to rest the legs and prepare for Saturday's race.  If you feel like you haven't gotten in enough training runs or if your legs feel great - stay off of them.  You can't cram for a race like you crammed for a test in school.
From Stephen Covey:
"Can you imagine "cramming" on the farm? Can you imagine forgetting to plant in the spring, flaking out all summer, and hitting it hard in the fall--ripping the soil up, throwing in the seeds, watering, cultivating--and expecting to get a bountiful harvest overnight?Cramming doesn't work in a natural system. That's the fundamental difference between a social and natural system. A social system is based on values; a natural system is based on principles. In the short term, cramming may appear to work in a social system. You can go for the "quick fixes" and techniques with apparent success. But in the long run they just don't work."

Sofa to 1/2 Marathon in 65 Days Part 7

Today is an 8 mile run day.  Why cut back on the miles?  To prepare you for next Sunday's 13 miler.  It's the trial run.  Some say you don't need to get in a 13 mile run before running a half.  If you want to swap that day out for 10 miles, go ahead.  Most full marathon training schedules only go to a 20 miler, but I feel that if you are feeling good then go for it - and time it.  It will give you that much more satisfaction for completing your 1/2 marathon in a couple of weeks AND for setting a new personal best on that day.  The adrenaline, crowd energy, and co-runners will push you faster than you run in your training runs.  Guaranteed!

This week: (days 47-53)
Monday - off
Tuesday - 3 miles
Wednesday - 5 miles
Thursday - off

The weather is finally breaking - woot woot!  There goes the last excuse for getting off of the couch and getting moving.  Don't worry if you are not fast.  Fast is relative.  Just move.

If you are a seasoned runner and you haven't started training yet, but you have been running, there is
still time for you to jump on this schedule and complete a half marathon on April 18, 2015.

Stop Looking For Balance

Often, people ask me "how do you balance it all"? Work, running, parenting, wife, volunteer . . .
Balance?
The truth is, I don't.
The bigger truth is, I would never want to.
I am sure it is the same truth for you.

Balance means everything is equal.
Most of us don't want equal emphasis on career and family as other things.  These are the big two. An example from the book reviewed below, which illustrates it awesomely, is comparing fitness to your career.  You don't need to exercise 40 plus hours a week to maintain your desired level of fitness.  Good news right?  Maybe just an hour 3 or 4 times per week.  Your boss definitely wants more from you in your job.  So are fitness and career balanced?  Of course not.

If not balance, then what?  Great question.
Purpose.
You have to know what you want and how important it is to you.
Will it be worth missing a few soccer games?
Is it worth being passed over for a promotion?
When you know what matters most and why, then you know how to cut up the pie.  You know which activities require more time
and
if you stay focused and true to your purpose,
you won't be searching
for balance.

Take the Stairs: 7 Steps to Achieving True SuccessTake the Stairs: 7 Steps to Achieving True Success by Rory Vaden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What I love most about this book is that it reinforces what we all know and that is that hard work, persistence, and sweat equity is and always will be the key to success. There is no magic pill. There is no 4 hour body. There is only self discipline. I love this quote from the book

“Success is never owned; it is only rented – and the rent is due every day.”

The reason I love this is because you can replace the word "success" with whatever goal you are striving for.

"Fitness is never owned; it is only rented - and the rent is due every day".
"Financial freedom is never owned; it is only rented - and the rent is due every day".
"Great relationships are never owned; they are only rented - and the rent is due every day".

From Couch to Marathon in 58 Days

Crazy?  Yes, a little.

Here's the thing.  I've fallen and I can't get up.  Running almost daily for 6 years, I haven't run regularly since June.  I've tried to get back on course, but I have failed.  I need a BIG CRAZY goal. This is my last ditch effort to get it together.

October 19th is the Detroit Marathon and I am committing today to do it.

Skin In The Game

At a networking breakfast yesterday, someone mentioned leaving the skin on kiwi when you make
smoothies.  It just didn't sound right to me, but then someone added "my kid eats kiwi with the skin on like an apple".  OK, but kids eat worms too.  I still wasn't 100% sold, but I tried it this morning anyway - you couldn't tell they were in there.  Believe me, if anything was funky our 10 year old would have called us out.

Thanks for the great tip.

I did some research this morning, there's actually a California Kiwifruit Organization.  I found out that by leaving the skin on the fiber value is tripled and more of the vitamin C is retained.  Hey, I just like that it's a shortcut in the morning.

According to Wikipedia to have "skin in the game" is to have incurred monetary risk by being
invested in achieving a goal.  In my smoothie recipe having skin in the game is to retain more of the vitamins and add fiber.

Hide the Spinach

Sometimes it's not the foods our kids (and husbands) won't eat, it's the way they are prepared.  For instance, most people steam brussel sprouts. Yuck!  You can't get most people to buy in to them this way.  Try roasting them with olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and orange peel. DELICIOUS!  The same goes for asparagus.  Steamed, not so liked.  Grilled or roasted it takes on an entirely different flavor, and texture, that will get more wins and empty plates.

I find that the best way to make sure that my family gets enough vegetables is to hide them in a fruity flavored smoothie.  Sometimes I sneak a few too many veggies in there and I am busted.  Sometimes I hit a home run like with this limey flavored smoothie.

Wednesday Night is Family Dinner Party Night

Parents, you know how hard it is to get the entire family seated in the same room, at the same time, to enjoy a "real" meal together.  The 9 year old boy just wants to play xbox.  15 year old girls just want to text.  Frankly, you're too tired to get it all done, so you give up before you even begin.

Last week I invented  the family themed dinner party.  It was Mexican night.  We had fish tacos (we made a cheese quesadilla for the 9 year old), beans and rice, homemade guacamole, fancy frozen drinks and we found a Spanish mix on Pandora.  It worked.  30 minutes of togetherness.

The next week,

Spicy Pork and Greens Soup

The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude.”  ~Julia Child

I love to experiment in the kitchen.  Some trials are hits and some hit the trash can.   Some are originals and others come from reliable sources like Food Network or Food and Wine Magazine.  Super Bowl Sunday I found another homerun from the January 2014 Bon Appetit magazine, Spicy Pork and Mustard Greens Soup.  I made it as a first course, but it could easily be an entree as well.

Mango Kiwi Smoothie

I made a beautiful fruit platter for breakfast this weekend.  Instead of trying to bag up the leftovers and hope that they still look attractive enough for the kids to eat them I threw them into the blender.

I Can't Stop Eating; Attack of Berta

Our regularly scheduled program, losing 6 pounds in 2 weeks, has been interrupted.  Berta strikes again.  Call it the snowed in with my refrigerator effect, or these kids are home too much now so I need to eat, or nothing is as warm and cozy as a ham sandwich.  I feel like Zac Efron in 17 Again

Ever have those days?

Day 4 Losing 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks

One of the best time savers I have found is cooking once to eat many times.  Sometimes this means
making a gigantic pot of spaghetti sauce and portioning it out in tupperware to stow away in the freezer for many pasta nights to come.  Sometimes this means making simple dishes that can be spruced up or combined to make new exciting future meals in a snap.

This week I made polenta and roasted asparagus as

Day 3 - Losing 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks

We are never so much disposed to quarrel with others as when we are dissatisfied with ourselves.”  ~ William Hazlitt

We are always our toughest critics.  When starting any weightloss endeavor you must have a goal and a timeline that are reasonable and you must cut yourself some slack in the middle.  Day 3 has not been my best day, but I am not going to sweat it.  I was thrown off of my game by a snow day - the 7th snow day this season - and I had a fun day with the kids and got to try out a new recipe.  Not the best day for moving me towards my goal, but still a fantastic day.
